Cut price covers ahoy! The Pickwick label’s Top Of The Pops albums sold for around 75p and featured a dozen cover versions of the latest pop hits played by session musicians. Starting in 1968 they had imitators at Music For Pleasure and Hallmark doing the same schtick; the result, even though session players included the likes of Elton John, were hugely varied and some genres – punk especially – were unrecognisable. Having been a laughing stock and boot sale regulars for pennies, the albums are now vaguely sought after and, in a world where cover versions and samples are big business, the odd track kind of works.
