It’s the trend that can’t be ignored, it even reached Noel Coward and Zsa Zsa Gabor, according to Rod McKuen – who was never one to miss an exploitation opp. Jerry Lee hops on with an inevitably rambunctious piano, while Chris Kenner leads general instruction and Bobby Bare specialises in the zig-zag variety on a cool string-driven romp. By contrast, Petula Clark remains universally uncool, but ‘Ya Ya’ has the style and she did do an album recorded in Memphis (a la Dusty), which is an overlooked and long lost gem. Finally we have the orchestral take of Ray Conniff which has bags of ‘out there’ credit due to its rampant guitar and drawling tempo. Let’s boogaloo.
