It’s a 14 hour drive via I-44 from Illinois to Texas, but these two tunes were from the same rockabilly roots: Bobby Crown and The Kapers were originally Bobby Lumpkin And The Kapers, their ‘One Way Ticket’ a driving Texan 45 from 1959. The band swapped vocalists and became The Capers before Bobby recorded a host of songs that sadly never saw the light of day. Built around a driving piano and slap bass, it’s a scorcher that fetches around £150 in its original pressing on Felco, its Lumpkin incarnation even more. A year on and Country G-J’s ‘Before The War’ was released on the Illinois Valley label quickly disappearing without trace; the flipside ‘Go Girl Go’ was their juddering swamp boogie moment that should have been. The band evaporated soon after, the dishevelled guitar breaks and lip curling vocal our only reminder of their swagger. So obscure is this 45 that it carries a £1500 tag for the original single.
